How to choose a location for your photography session

What location you choose, makes a big impact on how your final images look and feel. Below we will go through a few different things to consider when choosing a location for your next family photos.

Consider the style of your home

If you’re wanting to put your photos up on your wall at home it’s good to think about the style of your home. Do you like to stick with neutrals and beiges? If so, a field might suit you perfectly. Do you want something with a bit more colour? The greens from a park location will look amazing. Are you going for a coastal vibe? The beach might be the perfect spot for your family.

Think about what photos you are drawn to

When you’re scrolling through my Instagram, what images are you drawn to? Do you like the way the sun shines through the beautiful long grass, or do you prefer the green grass and more manicured park landscape? Maybe you’re more of a beach person and love the way the water brings a sense of calm to photos. It’s such a personal thing but go with what you feel is right and for your next yearly family photos, you can pick somewhere new!

Choose somewhere meaningful

Is there anywhere that is really meaningful to your family?

I recently had a couple that did a family photo shoot in a park in front of their ‘special tree’. They got married in front of this tree 10 years ago and go back every year to get a photo in front of it with their growing family.

Usually, they get a stranger to take a photo but for their 10 anniversary, they wanted to do something special and hired me to celebrate this milestone at a place that was super meaningful to them.

But it doesn’t have to be that significant. Think about where you like to spend time as a family. It could be a picnic in a park? Maybe a beach day?

Your own home

Personally, I love family photos in my own home. My husband and I put so much hard work into fully renovating our home and it's something we are really proud of. It’s also the house we brang our daughter home from the hospital to when she was born. It’s the place we play, learn, sleep, and grow. If we move on to another home I want to have photos of us in this home to show her when she’s older.

The best part about doing the photo shoot in your own home is that your kids can do all their favourite things in the comfort of their own space.

Here are some ideas of what we could capture:
- Jumping on the trampoline
- Baking a cake
- Cartwheels in the backyard
- Drawing

Your own home is definitely one to consider!

But whatever you choose we are sure to make something beautiful together.
